The new corporation set up in line with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), which is responsible for construction of new roads, maintenance and upgradation of the existing ones. There has been a new initiative taken by the State Government in giving emphasis of speedier execution of projects and attract more investment in this sector. Accordingly, WBHDCL has been constituted which would work as nodal agency for state-level roads and highways. The new Corporation aims to initiate measures to link up small roads to the state highways and will be responsible for maintenance and repair of such roads across the state. The road infrastructure in the state will be improved significantly and the new corporation will play a crucial role in this regard. West Bengal has 19 state highways with a total length of 4400 kilometers. Apart from the state highways, 15 national highways also passes through the state with a length of 2330 kilometers.
